Provider Manual Chapter 50 Vendor Call Requirements for Qualified Vendors
The Division has published an Electronic Visit Verification page with additional information about EVV.
View recording of the EVV Question and Answer session held on August 25, 2022
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the 21st Century Cures Act (Cures) require that all health care providers who refer AHCCCS members for an item or service, who order non-physician services for members, who prescribe medications to members, and who attend/certify medical necessity for services and/or who take primary responsibility for members’ medical care must be registered as AHCCCS providers. AHCCCS calls this initiative, and these providers, "ROPA.”
Until these acts passed, referring, ordering, prescribing, and attending providers were required to obtain and maintain a National Provider Identifier (NPI), but were not required to be registered as an AHCCCS provider, but with the implementation of ROPA requirements any registrable healthcare provider who is not already registered as an active AHCCCS provider must register or be identified as an Exception non-registerable provider*, if applicable.
To make the ROPA registration process as simple as possible, AHCCCS will develop a streamlined application for ROPA providers who meet all of the following criteria:
The streamlined registration application is expected to be available in late 2022. Following that implementation, claims that originate from an un-registered ROPA provider will not be reimbursed.
The Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) works with the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). They help people who are part of the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) by giving them healthcare coverage. This includes special services, tools, and extras for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
These DDD Health Plans Cover AAC Supplies and Services
AAC Systems are special methods used when regular talking isn't enough for everyday chatting and needs. There are two main types:
Who Can Get It: The DDD offers AAC tools to people of all ages if they're needed for their health.
How It Works: Sometimes, there are limits to how much, or what kind, of AAC you can get. But if it's needed to make your health better or stop it from getting worse, these limits might not apply, especially for people under age 21.
Delivery and Training: The device is delivered to your home. The SLP who completed your AAC device evaluation will contact you to plan your training sessions once you receive the AAC device. These sessions are for setting up the device and making any changes so it works best for you. They will be scheduled within 90 days after approval. You can contact the SLP for assistance if needed.
Re-assessment may be necessary if your communication needs change, the device doesn't effectively support your communication, or the device isn’t meeting your needs. Approval may be required. Contact your original SLP or DDD Support Coordinator for guidance.
The Department of Economic Security (DES) Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) strives to be respectful and responsive to the cultural and linguistic needs of the individuals and families we serve.
"Cultural competency" refers to the ability of staff to acknowledge and understand the influence cultural history, life experiences, language differences and values have on individuals and families. DDD incorporates skills, attitudes and policies that promote positive and effective interactions with diverse cultures. Communication with members, families, and groups from diverse cultures improves health outcomes and member satisfaction.
The Division’s Cultural Competency Plan encompasses the entire network of services provided by the Division, including:
Cultural Competency, Language Access, and Family/Member Centered Care Plan CYE 2024-2025

Students in need of behavioral health services may receive many of those services directly on school campuses. A referral may be made but is not required to initiate behavioral health services. Referrals or requests for services may be made by the school, family, member, or anyone assisting the member, directly to a behavioral health provider or through the member’s assigned health plan. A member’s Support Coordinator is also available to assist with referring and seeking behavioral health services through the member’s health plan.
The Division’s Behavioral Health Administration provides oversight of the subcontracted health plans and fee-for-service Tribal Health Program. For general information regarding behavioral health resources or to speak with the Division's Behavioral Health Administration, school administrators are encouraged to contact the Division's Customer Service Center.
Visit the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) Accessing Behavioral Health Services in Schools web page for more information.
If a school district or administrator would like information on behavioral health services within their geographic area or are interested in obtaining a partnership with a behavioral health provider, schools may reach out to one of the following:
The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System also offers behavioral health services for uninsured/underinsured students through the state's Regional Behavioral Health Authorities (RBHA).
