Report Fraud, Waste, Abuse, and Misconduct

The Department of Economic Security (DES) Office of Inspector General (OIG) exists to safeguard Arizonans by preventing and detecting fraud, waste, abuse and misconduct. The OIG investigates benefit fraud involving unemployment insurance, Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (formerly known as food stamps), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (cash assistance), and child care services (not child support).

The primary way DES discovers fraud is through reports from the community. The OIG accepts tips and complaints from all sources and appreciates your efforts to prevent and detect potential fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct.

What does fraud look like?

Fraud is when someone intentionally misrepresents to defraud DES to receive benefits or payments for which they are not legally eligible. Fraud can be committed in a variety of ways. Here are just a few:

Clients:

• Providing incorrect household composition information
• Falsifying income and intentionally not reporting income
• Hiding employment or self-employment information
• Falsifying Arizona residence or United States residency status
• Identity theft
• Buy, sell, trade, and/or exchange services for SNAP benefits.

Providers:

• Billing unnecessary services
• Billing for services and supplies not provided
• Making false statements and false claims
• Paying for and/or receiving kickbacks
