What Is Employment First?
Employment First is a national movement. Arizona became a part of it in 2017.
An Executive Order signed in 2017 said, "Every Arizonan should have the opportunity to participate in the workforce, including those who have disabilities".
Several agencies came together to increase job opportunities for people with disabilities. These agencies include DDD, Vocational Rehabilitation, schools, and providers.
Employment First promotes that all people with disabilities can work. They just need the right help and supports. People should have all information they need to make the right job choice.
People can choose where to work based on what they are good at. They can also choose a job based on what they like to do.
People with disabilities should have a voice in programs and policies.
Competitive Integrated Employment
The goal is for people with disabilities to have meaningful work.
- Competitive means you are paid at least minimum wage. You also have the same pay, benefits, and opportunities as others.
- Integrated means you work with other people who do not have disabilities.
- Competitive Integrated Employment should be the first choice for all working-age people who have a disability.
