Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) service benefits may be available to Division members who are also eligible for the Arizona Long-Term Care System (ALTCS).

AAC services are provided by the DDD Health Plans. The DDD Health Plans include:

• Mercy Care Plan (MCP)
• United Healthcare Community Plan (UHCCP)
• Tribal Health Program

What are AAC Systems?

AAC Systems are designed for individuals who cannot meet their communication needs through speech alone. There are two AAC system categories:

• Augmentative: Enhances existing speech.
• Alternative: Replaces all speech

Types of AAC

There are two AAC system types:

• Unaided AAC: Requires no equipment (e.g. gestures or sign language)
• Aided AAC: Uses tools or technology such as picture boards or speech generating devices.

Members should contact their Support Coordinator or their DDD Health Plan/Tribal Health Program for more information about AAC.
