Apprentices in the Virginia location display their certificates.
An apprenticeship is not just a job, it’s a career, and Phoenix Packaging LLC is currently building the career of more than 50 apprentices.
The DES Apprenticeship Program offers individuals an opportunity to earn a salary while learning a craft, and receive nationally recognized credentials along the way. Employers like Phoenix Packaging LLC develop apprentices from the time they are brand new, until they are well-versed in the field.
The Chandler-based plastic container manufacturer began its apprenticeship program in Arizona in April 2022, and currently has over 50 apprentices working at their facility. The company has experienced past success with apprenticeships within its Virginia office, where they currently employ approximately 170 apprentices. Apprenticeships in Arizona range from quality control to maintenance and technical positions.
“We are able to give them a career, so they have a path. Everything is set in stone as far as how they grow. We don’t just want them to be an employee, but to have a career,” said Phoenix Packaging Training and Development Manager Jennifer Tickle, who started her career with the company as an apprentice.
Apprentices are able to attain all of the training and experience required for an accreditation. In many cases, like with Phoenix Packaging, high advancement within a company is also available.
“I have been able to learn all of the processes in the plant, so with that I’m able to give my knowledge on [to others],” said Jennifer. “I have six trainers under me, so I’ve watched them grow all the way from pre-apprenticeship. I enjoy watching people succeed and I enjoy watching them grow, and that’s the importance of the apprenticeship program.”
Employers who offer registered apprenticeship programs also enjoy the benefits of creating a more diverse workforce, reducing the turnover rate, experiencing higher productivity and more.
Before a company can establish an apprenticeship program, it needs to register with DES so it can acquire the accreditation needed to sponsor apprentices. Once a company has signed up with DES to sponsor an apprenticeship, it also has all of the benefits of ARIZONA@WORK at its disposal. Joann Bueno is an apprenticeship program manager at DES, and helped Jennifer and Phoenix Packaging LLC get established in Arizona.
“Employers who have an apprenticeship program are also auto-approved to be on the Eligible Training Providers List. Any other workforce development needs they have, they are referred to other partners in ARIZONA@WORK. Whether it’s veteran services or exploring hiring persons with disabilities or [individuals with background barriers],” said Joann.
