June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), an occasion that has helped raise awareness about the abuse and neglect of older adults, as well as the resources available to prevent and respond to instances of abuse, since 2006. The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse launched the campaign and the United Nations later recognized in 2011, understanding that elder abuse is a human rights issue around the world. Partnerships from the local to the international level are necessary to properly respond to this issue, and as Arizona’s human services agency, DES plays a critical role in coordinating efforts within our state.
