Prior to the start of 2019, nearly half of all Americans said they were "somewhat likely" or "very likely" to make a New Year's resolution. With yet another new year upon us, many people, including older adults, commit to a healthier lifestyle. With help from the Area Agency on Aging (AAA), Region One, this can be a realistic 2020 goal.
The AAA offers an array of classes and seminars for older adults to take control, heal their minds and bodies, increase activity, and live well.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 fall each year. But, many of these falls are preventable. The Geri-Fit 8-week class helps to prevent falls and improves balance through strength training. These classes are held in many locations including Avondale, Gilbert, Tempe and multiple Phoenix locations. Additional classes include the Matter of Balance class that focuses on increasing balance, further reducing falls through strength training.
As important as it is to be active, it’s even more important to take control of your health so you can live well and manage your life.
According to the National Health Council, approximately 133 million Americans have a chronic condition. More and more people are living with more than one chronic illness, such as depression, diabetes or heart disease. For adults 55 and older with an ongoing health condition, the AAA offers support. The 6-week Chronic Condition Self-Management course helps older adults find ways to deal with their pain and fatigue, learn how to promote better nutrition, start exercising and understand their treatment choices. This class also provides information on how to talk with your doctor and loved ones about your health.
“Our Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs focus on the positive aspects of growing older,” said Cindy Saverino, Community Action and Aging Programs Administrator. “These classes enable individuals to take control, manage their symptoms and improve their lives so that they can stay energetic and vibrant for as long as possible.”
In addition to the Chronic Conditions Self-Management course, the AAA offers other classes to take control of your life including the complementary Chronic Pain Self-Management, Diabetes Self-Management and Cancer: Thrive & Survive.
