Summer is a great time for new employees to kick off their careers with their first job. Whether it’s an internship, temporary summer gig, or an entry-level position, new jobs can be exciting, but also nerve-wracking if you don’t know what to expect. Here are 4 tips for achieving success in a first job.
Be Professional – First impressions matter, so it’s best to be professional regardless of how others act. So, what does it mean to be professional?
Be Present – While at work, be at work. Keep your phone away to avoid the temptation to text and scroll through social media.
Be Positive – Refrain from gossip about coworkers, bosses, other companies, etc., as it can raise a red flag and label you as someone who may not be able to be trusted. Strive for a positive attitude as most bosses and employees prefer to work with someone who has an optimistic outlook on life.
Be Brave – Uncertainty is natural, but the employees who stand out are the ones who take risks despite being scared. Be the first to volunteer to take on a new task or project, strike up conversations even if you’re shy, and muster confidence in your abilities – you may surprise yourself and you will certainly gain attention from your bosses.
