On June 14, 2024, dozens of organizations and professionals in the fields of aging and caregiving gathered with family caregivers for the 2024 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) Conference in Phoenix to learn from experts in the field of aging. This year’s WEAAD Conference focused on how to “Be the One” to see, stop, and prevent elder abuse in all its forms.
With esteemed keynote speakers and a variety of breakout sessions, participants gained knowledge, insight and best practices they can use to bolster services for older adults and further combat abuse within Arizona’s aging population.

During her opening remarks for the 2023 WEAAD Conference, DES Director Angie Rodgers introduced SpeakUpAZ.org, a new platform to educate Arizonans about the prevalence of abuse and neglect, as well as how to prevent, identify and report it. Our goal is for all Arizonans to be proactive with protecting vulnerable adults, and for potential victims to know they’re not alone.
Abuse, neglect, or exploitation can happen anywhere, from our homes and community centers to our workplaces and healthcare facilities. As a community, it is our responsibility to ensure that all Arizonans lead a life free from harm. We all have the ability to help, and your voice can make a difference in saving the lives of vulnerable adults.
