I am pleased to share that DES is reinstating the Director’s Blog. Its purpose is to provide a central location for key Department messages, including important updates and announcements about our programs and services, as well as context and background to help explain what is happening, why it is happening, and how it will impact you.

For this first entry, I want to share a story that has informed my public service and leadership throughout my career. In the realm of inspirational tales, the Starfish story stands out as a powerful narrative about the impact of individual actions, teamwork, and commitment. It serves as a reminder that even small efforts can make a significant difference. We will make a difference together and create an Arizona for everyone: one person, one family, one community at a time.
One day, a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said...
“I made a difference for that one.”
This story beautifully illustrates how small actions, when taken collectively, can lead to significant outcomes. Each starfish the boy saves is a life restored. In a team setting, every member's effort contributes to the overarching goal, no matter how small it seems.
I can recall numerous occasions when the actions of my DES colleagues motivated me to explore additional ways to create an environment that encourages innovative solutions and promotes collective success.
The story also showcases the young boy's dedication to saving as many starfish as possible, demonstrating the importance of perseverance. Committing to a cause or project requires determination, even in the face of daunting odds.
At DES, our team members make a difference every day with their unwavering commitments and small, thoughtful actions. The ripple effect is subtle yet powerful and serves as a catalyst to building a better, thriving Arizona, one meaningful action at a time.
The Starfish story is one of my favorites because it’s a testament to the power of teamwork and commitment. It reminds me that while I may not be able to change the world single-handedly, my efforts, when combined with those of others, can create meaningful change. By working together and staying committed, we can make a difference, one starfish at a time.
