On January 15, 1973, the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) opened its doors to the public, beginning its legacy of serving Arizona’s most vulnerable individuals and families. A half-century ago, the Department was created following legislation enacted in 1972 to create a single agency to take appropriate steps to reduce and prevent unemployment and dependency, and to assist in alleviating the economic and social impact of unemployment and dependency on individuals and their families.
